Study Suggests Chelation Therapy and EDTA Can Reduce Risk of Heart Attack
The results of a new clinical trial could mean fewer cardiac deaths. The clinical trial found that the use of a chelation regimen modestly reduced the risk of composite adverse cardiovascular outcomes.
Heart Attack Stats
In 2008, over 616,000 people died of heart disease. In the United States, heart disease was the cause of approximately 25 percent of deaths – or almost one in every four. Each year, 785,000 Americans have their first coronary attack – and another 470,000 have a second attack.
Chelation Therapy for Heart Disease
In chelation therapy, chelating agents like EDTA are intravenously administered (through the veins) to bind atoms of metals or minerals and hold them tightly so that they can be removed from the body. While chelation therapy is most commonly used to address heavy metal conditions like lead poisoning, some physicians use chelation therapy to treat conditions like heart disease.
There have been several studies on the efficacy of chelation therapy. A recent study examined the effects of chelation in patients with diabetes. The study found that chelation treatments reduced cardiovascular events, like heart attacks and death in patients with diabetes.
The Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT) showed that infusions of disodium EDTA chelation therapy produced a modest reduction in cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes. According to the results of the trial, one-third of the participants had a 41 percent overall reduction in the risk of any cardiovascular event.
Participants saw a 40 percent reduction in the risk of death from heart disease, nonfatal stroke, or nonfatal heart attack. In addition, TACT patients saw a 52 percent reduction in recurrent heart attacks, and a 43 percent reduction in death from any cause.
The use of chelation therapy to treat heart disease and other conditions grew 68 percent in the United States between 2002 and 2007. According to the 2008 National Health Statistics Report, 111,000 people received chelation treatments for conditions outside of metal poisoning during that period.

Treatment can require 30 or more infusions, but this varies depending on the patient.
