Estrogen Dominance

What is Estrogen Dominance?

Whenever there is an excess of hormones an overall imbalance develops which may lead to health problems. That is particularly true if the body produces too much estrogen and not enough progesterone. This occurrence is known as estrogen dominance.

Estrogen dominance can alter a woman’s health. It has been linked to many conditions including increased PMS symptoms, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis. Symptoms of estrogen dominance can include allergies, decreased libido, fatigue, headaches, infertility, and fat gain. Studies also show that estrogen dominance can lead to breast, uterine and ovarian cancers all considered to be estrogen dependent.

Many things can cause estrogen dominance in women including excess exposure to xenoestrogens often found in consumer products like detergents and lotions. Birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy can also lead to estrogen dominance. If you lack ovulation during your menstrual cycle you could also have estrogen dominance. Finally, poor diet and negative lifestyle factors like smoking and drinking can lead to estrogen dominance.

Treatments & Therapies

Alternative treatments for estrogen dominance include bioidentical progesterone cream, herbal formulas and milk thistle. Bioidentical progesterone cream can curb hormone imbalances caused by external sources of estrogen. Milk thistle is often used to treat liver disorders, can also help address estrogen dominance.

Studies show that certain lifestyle changes can also reduce estrogen dominance. Reducing stress, restoring digestive balance, reducing alcohol consumption, and eating a diet rich in fiber are just some suggestions for improving overall health.
