Stem Cell Therapy
There is a way to benefit from the healing power of stem cells without the creation, usage, and destruction of embryos. It’s called Adult Stem Cell Therapy.

The use of adult stem cells to heal injuries is groundbreaking and not controversial. In fact, the use of adult stem cells in several therapies is FDA approved.
As we age, the amount of regenerative cells we possess declines, making it harder for us to heal after injury. Adult stem cell therapy addresses regeneration issues, and in many cases helps patients to recover from injury, joint and muscle pain faster.
Stem cell therapy is very effective in the treatment of cancers, but also in reducing pain and injury. In many cases it is a preferred alternative to orthopedic surgery. Unlike surgery, stem cell therapy is minimally invasive, and has a shorter recovery time.
Stem cell therapy can be used to treat:
- Musculoskeletal pain
- Back or Neck Injury
- Joint pain
If bone marrow is used patients typically only require one treatment. If PRP is used, most people require anywhere from two to six treatments provided over the course of four to six weeks. Treatment will vary patient to patient, depending on multiple factors including injury site.
In 1999 and 2000, scientists found that by manipulating adult mouse tissues they could produce different cell types. With that finding they were able to determine that cells from bone marrow could produce nerve or liver cells and cells in the brain could yield other cell types.
Stem cell research has progressed dramatically over the course of the past few years. Adult stem cells are now being used totreat many conditions including heart disease and Leukemia.
The process begins with you. The most commonly used stem cells in clinical transplants come from bone marrow, peripheral blood, umbilical cords, and adipose (fat) tissue. In other words, the patient’s own tissue provides the cells necessary for treatment. While bone marrow has been used as the main source of stem cells for the past several years, fat tissue is gaining popularity.
The patient is numbed using local anesthetics, so that they experience minimal discomfort. Stem cells are removed from the patient’s tissue, and put into centrifuge where regenerative cells and platelets are separated from other blood products. The final product has 5 to 10 times the baseline levels of regenerative cells and growth factors.
Once injected, the healing begins instantly as the stem cells make their way around the injured tissue, stimulating your body’s healing response. Stem cells are so effective, because they are able to differentiate or change into whichever types of cells are required at the injury site whether it’s ligament, tendon, cartilage or bone.
What to Expect
Unlike conventional treatments like orthopedic surgery, stem cell therapy requires no cutting or stitches. The outpatient process allows patients to return home in just one to two hours. Injections are conducted at the Medical Center by experienced medical professionals. Patients should avoid drinking alcohol and recreation drugs before treatment. Patients can typically return to work the next day depending upon the site of the treatment and amount of physical activity required. You may feel sore for the first few days.
Risks & Side Effects
There is a risk of infection with any transplant. Other side effects can include:
- Mouth sores
- Sore throat
- Nausea and vomiting
- Low blood count
- Loss of hair
- Changes in skin pigmentation
Doctors or practitioners will monitor a patient’s recovery. The amount, type and severity of side effects is dependent upon the health of the patient, amount of previous treatment, and type of transplant received. Side effects can typically be managed by medication and go away over time.
